About : Tilicho Lake Trek – World’s Highest Elevated Lake

Tilicho Lake Trek is considered as the highest altitude lake trek in the world. Tilicho is famous among the pilgrimages. The religious significance of this lake also named as “Kak Bhusundi Lake” as mentioned in the epic Ramayana. It is believed among the Hindus that Kak Bhusundi is the name for that Sage who took the form of Kak which means crow to tell the happenings of Ramayana to Garuda- king of birds, near this lake. So internal tourism for this trek is also quite popular.

This trek is not so easy but will be truly thrilling, exciting and finally rewarding with the heaven view of Tilicho at an altitude of 4949m. Among various trek routes within the Annapurna Region, this trek is challenging yet gratifying. The stunning waterfalls and running pure water streams, magnificent natural beauty, virgin cultural and traditional values, captivating floras and faunas are displayed with the picturesque view of much of eastern side of the world popular Annapurna Region. The mountains enclosing this lake are Muktinath peak, Khangsar, Nilgiri, and Tilicho.

How will we reach there?

The capital city of Nepal has so much to offer for one-day sightseeing before we start our trek to Tilicho. So, a day exploration of Kathmandu Valley will lead a next day’s drive to west through the dense forest and farmland to Chamje. As we begin our trek now we follow anti-clockwise route behind the 50km long Annapurna Himalaya. The local inhabitants are mostly seen influenced by Tibetan culture and tourism along practicing Buddhism. Until Manang, Annapurna Circuit Trail is followed and then from here we divert west towards Marshyangdi Valley and join the less-visited trail to Tilicho Lake. Memorable sites along the trail route encompass The Upper Pisang to Braga route which plate up great views of Annapurna II and IV along extraordinary architecture with an exceptionally beautiful view of Annapurna, Muktinath Himal and Nilgiri. We then make some steep ascends to reach Tilicho Lake.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport (1,300m/4,264ft)

Day 02: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and preparation for the trek

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu – Chamje (1,410m/4,626ft) – 6 – 7 hours trek

Day 04: Trek from Chamje – Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Day 05: Trek from Dharapani – Chame (2,710m/8,891ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Day 06: Trek from Chame – Pisang (3,300m/10,824ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Day 07: Trek from Pisang – Manang (3,500m/11,482ft) – 6 – 7 hours trek

Day 08: Trek from Manang – Khangsar (3,745m/12,286ft) – 2 – 3 hours trek

Day 09: Trek from Khangsar – Tilicho Base Camp (4,140m/13,583ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Day 10: Explore Tilicho Lake (4,949m/16,138ft) and then trek back to base camp – 5 – 6 hours trek

Day 11: Trek from Tilicho Base Camp – Yak Kharka (4,040m/13,020ft) – 4 – 5 hours trek

Day 12: Trek from Yak Kharka – Thorong Phedi (4,420m/14,501ft) – 3 – 4 hours trek

Day 13: Trek from Thorong Phedi – Muktinath (3,800m/12,468ft) via Thorong La Pass (5,416m/17,764ft) – 7 – 8 hours trek

Day 14: Trek from Muktinath – Jomsom (2,715m/8,910ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Day 15: Fly from Jomsom – Pokhara (823m/2,700ft) – 30 minute flight

Day 16: Fly from Pokhara – Kathmandu – 30 minutes flight

Day 17: Final Departure

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport (1,300m/4,264ft)

Our representative will receive you outside the terminal hall. Please, look for our Treks play card. He will transfer you to the hotel, introduce your trekking guide and check the necessities. In the afternoon, stroll around the colorful market of the bustling city – Thamel.

Day 02:Kathmandu: Sightseeing and preparation for the trek

After breakfast, proceed for sightseeing around the famous UNESCO world heritage sites of Kathmandu. We visit Pashupatinath Temple – the sacred Hindu temple located on the bank of holy river Bagmati, Boudha Stupa – the biggest stupa architecture in Nepal and Swayambhunath Stupa – the 2,000 years old legendary Stupa perched on the hillock.

The sightseeing tour also covers the visit to Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, the Krishna Temple, the Kumbheswore Temple, the Golden Temple and many more. The sightseeing tour ends Kathmandu Durbar Square that is home to living goddess Kumari, Nautale Durbar, the Kaal Bhairav, the Swer Bhairav, the Freak Street and more.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu – Chamje (1,410m/4,626ft) – 6 – 7 hours trek

Today we start early in the morning to drive from Kathmandu to Chamje village. Chamje is a small settlement in the Annapurna region located at an elevation of 1430m. There is a beautiful waterfall which is an attraction of the village for local and foreign tourist. The beautiful greenery all around adds more charm to the trek.

Day 04: Trek from Chamje – Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Today we start early in the morning. The trekking trail goes through the varied vegetation, waterfalls and mixed communities who are believed to be migrated from Tibet. After crossing the suspension bridge and ascending two seep section, we reach the village of Tal. From Tal, we walk across Kodo village, make several ascend and descend and walk through the scenic ridge before reaching Dharapani. It is the biggest village in the Manang District.

Day 05: Trek from Dharapani – Chame (2,710m/8,891ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

After breakfast, we walk on a few steep ridges covered with rhododendron forest and cross several landslides on the route to Chame. On the way, we get the incredible view of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II and Annapurna IV (7,525m). We walk across small hot springs where we can take quick respite on natural hot water to relax our tired muscles. Chame is the district headquarter of Manang District in the Gandaki Zone.

Day 06:Chame – Pisang (3,300m/10,824ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

A steep and narrow path leads us to the dense forest and takes us to the dramatic curved rock face, rising 1500m from the river. It is probably the steepest part of the Marshyangdi valley, so steep that the trail is carved in the vertical rock. After passing the rock, the valley widens up and displays great vistas. Few hours trek leads us to the village of Lower Pisang.

Day 07: Pisang – Manang – 6 – 7 hours trek

Today, we follow the trail that leads us to Upper Pisang via Geru. On the way, we get the great views of mighty mountains like Annapurna and Pisang. Now onwards, we begin to notice the change in landscapes, vegetation, and climate. We visit Bagra Monastery, the largest monastery in the entire Manang District.

Day 08:Trek from Manang – Khangsar (3,745m/12,286ft) – 2 – 3 hours trek

After breakfast, we hike up to the picturesque village of Khangsar. As we move further, the trail cuts down through a gorge and Tilicho peak is visible far on horizon shrouded in clouds. On the way, we get to enjoy the incredible natural beauty of the Annapurna region. Further walking through small scenic settlement and crossing Tore Monastery, we reach Khangsar village.

Day 09: Trek from Khangsar – Tilicho Base Camp (4,140m/13,583ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Today we walk through wide grassy fields and negotiate small uphill section to enjoy magnificent views of the entire valley. After dropping down a steep inclination, we enter into the Tilicho Base Camp. We camp at the base camp as there is no lodging option.

Day 10: Explore Tilicho Lake (4,949m/16,138ft) and then trek back to base camp – 5 – 6 hours trek

First, we make a strenuous climb and walk on a moraine with spectacular views of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Khangsar and Muktinath peaks. Upon arrival at Tilicho Lake (highest lake in the world), we enjoy the turquoise-tinted water and surrounding peaks. We enjoy some magical moments at the lake and trek back to the base camp.

Day 11: Trek from Tilicho Base Camp – Yak Kharka (4,040m/13,020ft) – 4 – 5 hours trek

The returning journey from Tilicho Base Camp takes us out of Marsyangdi valley and we can notice an abrupt change in the surrounding. The tree line gives way to alpine vegetation. The trail follows old Khangsar village, crosses Log Bridge over the river between Gumsang and Yak Kharka. You can discover lots of Yak grazing and moving around in Yak Kharka.

Day 12: Trek from Yak Kharka – Thorong Phedi (4,420m/14,501ft) – 3 – 4 hours trek

Today we walk uphill to reach Thorong Phedi. After a short uphill walk, we cross a suspension bridge that takes us to Ledar village. We then ascend and walk through the towering cliffs before reaching Thorong Phedi, the last village before Thorong La Pass. On the way, you will be rewarded with best views of Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syangang, Thorong Peak and Mt. Katungkan. The word Phedi in Nepalese dialects refers to the foot of the mountain.

Day 13: Trek from Thorong Phedi – Muktinath (3,800m/12,468ft) via Thorong La Pass (5,416m/17,764ft) – 7 – 8 hours trek

Today we start early around three in the morning and walk up to the mountain. We cross the pass from east to west (Manang to Muktinath) which is the safest and easiest route to travel. The summit of pass features incredible highland panorama and majestic Himalayan vistas. We take a few photos before taking a long descend to Muktinath valley.

Day 14: Trek from Muktinath – Jomsom (2,715m/8,910ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

Muktinath is a significant pilgrimage site from Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. We pay homage to Muktinath temple before joining our trail to Jomsom. There are water spots where holy water pours out channeled from the streams above the temple. As we move we can admire the incredible beauty of Mt. Dhaulagiri. We walk through the meadow, cross streams and hill to reach Kagbeni. It is a village laden with chortens (memorial stupas) and monasteries. After lunch at Kagbeni, we walk through Kali Gandaki River valley to reach Jomsom.

Day 15: Fly from Jomsom – Pokhara (823m/2,700ft) – a 30-minute flight

After breakfast, we catch an early morning flight to Pokhara. The flight is exciting as we get the aerial view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world.

The comfortable climate will definitely make us feel better. We take a boat ride in the turquoise lake of Phewa. If time permits, we visit Davis falls and various cultural sites.

Overnight at star hotel in Pokhara

Day 16: Fly from Pokhara – Kathmandu – 30 minutes flight

After breakfast, we make a short flight to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. We can take a rest in our hotel room and spend some time for refreshment. In the evening, we enjoy farewell dinner organized by Annapurna Encounter to celebrate the successful completion of the trek.

Day 17: Final Departure

Your adventurous journey in Nepal comes to an end today. Our airport representative will drop you to the airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight.
