Each Spring, the Mustang Tiji Festival Trek takes place in Lo Manthang in front of King’s Palace. Tiji is one of the most well-known and revered festivals in the whole Mustang region. The Mustang Tiji Festival is a spring-renewal party that ushers into the monsoons while celebrating the victory of good over evil in a local ritual called “demon chasing.”
Tiji derives from the words ten che, meaning the “hope of the dharma that prevails in all worlds,” the message Guru Rinpoche carried over a thousand years ago through this region. It is believed that Lo Manthang people began celebrating the Mustang Tiji Festival in the 15th century at the time of Lama Lowo Khenchen. It is one of the renowned Buddhist masters and son of King Amgon Sangpo.
The chosen monk steward Dorge Shunu reveals his different forms during the three-day masked dance Tiji festival in Lo Monthang, Upper Mustang. An ancient thangka painting by Guru Rimpoche Padmasambhava is represented as drum beating and chanting fills the air of Lo Manthang.
The Teji festival will take place in Upper Mustang on 30 May, 31 May and 01 June 2020. Therefore, our trek start from 22 May 2020.
Until 1992, Upper Mustang was closed for foreigners. According to the rumors Michel Peissel was the first western people to witness the celebration of Tiji Festival.
